Sport Unlimited
'Sport Unlimited' - a Sport England funded, nationwide initiative to get more children and young people taking part in sports that interest them most outside of school.
The three-year programme will enable 900,000 more 11-19 year olds to choose from a vast range of sports including several in which Team GB has excelled at the 2008 Olympics such as sailing and cycling as well as less traditional sports like dodgeball, snowboarding and American football.
Sport Unlimited offers young people 8-week taster sessions in sports which they have requested and aims to get 300,000 participants to join clubs and continue with sport when the 8 weeks are up.
Sport Unlimited will make a significant contribution to the Government's target of giving children and young people the opportunity to do 5 hours of PE and sport a week at school and in the community. The funding is part of the additional £100 million investment in sport for young people announced by the Prime Minister in 2007.
In South Northants the activities which will be on offer include: Golf; Cricket; Trampolining; Table tennis; Fencing; Athletics; Rugby; Girls' Fitness.
In Daventry the activities will include: Golf; Cricket; Trampolining; Table tennis; Badminton; Athletics; Rugby; Girls' Fitness.
Funding for this Sport England project is aimed at the 11-19 age range and does allow for Year 6 inclusion. It is targeted at pupils who take part in two hours of curricular PE and one or even two hours of 'after school' or community sport.
School Sports Coaching Programme (SSCP)
'School Sport Coaching Programme' - a Youth Sport Trust developed initiative to provide high quality, sustained coaching during OSHL learning.
For many years coaches have worked in schools and national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport and PDMs have done their best to ensure high quality and relevant delivery.
The School Sport Coaching Programme now offers the chance to develop national programme whereby all coaches will deliver to a consistently high standard and will benefit from quality assured coach development from within SSPs.
The School Sport Coaching Programme aims to support around 1500 coaching hours per SSP per year. Within the SSP coaches will be deployed in: Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Athletics, Football, Dance and Dance Mats. Each coach will deliver over 38 weeks of the academic year and this will be achived through after school sessions, holiday time and at weekends, based on school sites. In addiion to their coaching responsibilities, they will also support engagement in competition and encourage schools to develop club links. Where possible they will also provide support to young coaches emerging from the Step into Sport programme.
Schools in the SSP will be invited to book termly 'slots,' varying age groups over the course of that time in hour-long sessions. Schools are encouraged to provide two one-hour sessions per day. A typical example of this would be for a secondary school to host a 3.30pm-4.30pm session for secondary school pupils, followed by a 4.30pm-5.30pm session for a local primary school.
