In addition to numerous training opportunities, the SSP also has access to a number of coaches, who are able to work in schools during curriculum time or after school, in out of schools hours learning (OSHL).
The opportunity for coaches working in schools has grown in the SSP over the last few years. Following strict SSP, Sports College and countywide guidelines (for 'AOTTs' - adults other than teachers) and criteria, these coaches are trained to a minimum Level 2 standard in their respective sports. They have also been CRB (Criminal records Bureau) checked and are all qualified in first/emergency aid.
These coaches are employed on contracts varying in duration, numbers of hours per week and availability by the SSP solely, or in conjuncture with other bodies (for example, Local Authorities). More information on the coaches employed through the SSP can be found here. The SSP currently has coaches qualified in the following sports: Tennis, Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Cycling and Multi Skills (x 3). With the School Sports Coaching Programme currently being rolled out throughout the SSP, further coaches in Football, Netball and Hockey will be employed to deliver high quality coaching in schools.
The benefits to schools of allowing coaches to work in the curriculum and/or during OSHL are numerous. For example:
