About Us
The South Northants and Daventry School Sports Partnership (SSP) is one of the largest SSPs in the country, spanning two districts and 11 secondary schools and 94 primary schools.
The SSP is split into two phases; 'Phase 1' schools, who formed the partnership at its inception in 2003, with 7 secondary and 66 primary schools and 'Phase 2' schools, who came on board in September 2006.
Since SSPs inception nationwide, delivering the Physical Education and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP), real improvements have been made across the country in the amount and quality of PE being delivered to young people. Figures recently released by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) shows that the number of young people taking part in 2 hours of school sport in the curriculum has risen from under 25% in 2002 to over 90% in 2009. Figures also show that, nationally, over 50% of young people are taking part in 3 hours school sport.
Encouraged by this success, the Government has set new challenges up to 2011. We are tasked with creating a world-class system of PE and sport for young people, and the aim is to offer them 5 hours sporting opportunities a week. This means that we not only have to influence what schools offer during the school day, but persuade children and young people to do more sport in their leisure time, either at school sites or in the community.
This means that we have to be more entrepreneurial in our thinking than ever before - trying out new ideas and building on the success of previous ideas that have worked, as well as working with more partners and organisations. Our aim is to start shouting about the 'quiet revolution' that has been happening over the past 6 years.
In the run up to the 2012 London Olympics the conditions may never be better to succeed. At the South Northants and Daventry SSP we are focussed on ensuring as many children and young people as possible have access to high quality, sustainable sporting opportunities. To do this we require the support of primary and secondary schools, Head Teachers, School Sport Coordinators and Primary Link Teachers, local authorities, county sports partnerships, national governing bodies, Government and, most importantly, young people and parents. In short, if you are reading this, we need you to recognise the ethos behind what we do and help us work towards achieveing our targets.
